Mike Gershon’s Effective Teaching and Learning
A Trust-Based CPD Platform for Schools Like Yours

Develop, Retain and Enthuse Your Staff with the Only Professional Development Platform That Prioritises Teacher Autonomy
This is a Platform Built on One Belief: Teachers Develop Best When They Feel Trusted, Not Monitored
The Future of CPD is Here.
Unlock Freedom, Autonomy and Professional Growth for the Teachers You Lead.

- ✅ Mike Gershon’s Effective Teaching and Learning is the teacher professional development platform built on the belief that teachers given genuine professional autonomy grow faster, teach better, and stay longer than teachers managed into CPD compliance.
- ✅ Most CPD platforms are designed to give senior leaders visibility of staff engagement – dashboards, completion rates, compliance reports. I’ve built the opposite: a platform that belongs to the teacher, not the institution. No dashboards, no compliance and no analytics. It’s a bold choice, but a deliberate one, based on what I’ve learned working with tens of thousands of teachers and hundreds of senior leaders over the last 15 years.
- ✅ Compliance training works for compliance. Areas like safeguarding and health and safety. We accept the need to do the same as everyone else, because we recognise the importance and singularity of these topics. It does not work for developing teaching and learning. Here, autonomy and feeling trusted are the essential building blocks that engage and motivate teachers.

- ✅ Self-determination theory – one of the most replicated findings in psychology – tells us that autonomy, mastery, and purpose are the conditions under which professionals thrive. I’ve built a platform around those three things. The same three things that I’ve seen teachers searching for throughout my time working with schools. Things I sought myself when I was in the classroom. Maybe things you have sought in your professional life as well.
- ✅ If membership to the platform helps you retain one teacher who might otherwise have left, it will immediately have paid for itself in terms of money saved, time saved, and continuity of teaching. And that’s on top of the benefits your staff will gain from using the platform and taking control of their professional development – in a way that works for them. When we give teachers autonomy, alongside the support to develop professionally, we create the conditions for increased motivation, sustained engagement, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Give Your Teachers the Tools to Take Control of Their Careers, Their Classrooms and Their Futures
If we haven’t met before – hi, my name’s Mike 👋.

Since 2010, I’ve worked with hundreds of schools and tens of thousands of teachers, helping them take control of their classrooms, their careers, and build the futures they want.
- 🎯 I’ve written 40 books on teaching and learning, selling more than 160,000 copies, and been translated into multiple languages.
- 🎯 My teaching resources have been viewed and downloaded over 4 million times by teachers in 180 countries and territories.
- 🎯 I’ve worked with over 700 schools, as well as governments, charities and regional authorities, supporting teachers across the UK and around the world.
- 🎯 I’ve delivered hundreds of training sessions, mentored countless teachers, and observed in excess of a thousand lessons.
- 🎯 And I’ve produced more than 100 guides to classroom practice, filled with strategies that work.
Most people build an audience first and expertise second.
I’ve spent fifteen years doing the work, before creating something I believe is truly meaningful for schools like yours and the teachers you lead.
Here are some testimonials from recent in-person training sessions, so you can get a sense of the kind of work I do with schools, week in, week out.

Over the past decade and a half, I’ve made it my business to master teaching and learning
To unlock not just the secrets of what truly has an impact, but also the practical strategies teachers can use to bring learning to life, in a way that works for them.
Throughout my work, I’ve stuck to a mantra.
A fundamental principle.
Teachers need autonomy.

They are expert decision-makers.
Skilled professionals who put their learners’ needs first every time they step inside the classroom.
Always looking for ways to make a difference.
So many of the developments in teaching and learning over the last few years seem to have found a way to either deskill teachers or degrade their professionalism.
Do any of these feel familiar?
❌ Platforms that track how many minutes of video a member of staff has watched.
❌ Services that provide ready-made lesson PowerPoints that take no account of the learners who they are meant to be for.
❌ Artificial intelligence that coughs up lesson plans, questions and activities, all while slowly eroding the autonomy and thinking processes that underpin great teaching.
❌ Lesson packs that insist on teachers following a script, rather than engaging responsively with the learners in front of them.
❌ Professional development guidance that insists there is a ‘right’ way to teach, or which starts from the premise that teachers need to be walked through how to do things.
I don’t doubt that many of these developments began with good intentions.
But why do they all start from a deficit position?
An implication that teachers lack skills, ability and understanding?
For me, that simply doesn’t tally with the reality of what I see in schools and classrooms up and down the country.

Professional Development for Teachers You Trust
Mike Gershon’s Effective Teaching and Learning doesn’t try to provide everything.
There’s no safeguarding training. No health and safety training. No compliance courses of any type.
I wanted to build a platform that has a single, unified focus.
Centred on the one thing that matters most in any school. The one thing that research shows has the potential to make a bigger difference than anything else.
Teaching and learning.
And before I walk you through the detail of what’s inside the platform, let me recap a few points.
Because I don’t want to waste your time if this isn’t for you and your school.
To Clarify, Mike Gershon’s Effective Teaching and Learning Isn’t For You If:
⛔ Teaching and learning isn’t a priority in your school.
⛔ You don’t believe that teachers grow faster, teach better, and stay longer when they are given genuine professional autonomy.
⛔ You want a platform with compliance tools like dashboards, analytics and completion rates.
⛔ Facilitating professional development isn’t something you want from an online platform.
⛔ You believe that teachers need to be told the ‘right’ way to teach.
If those don’t apply to you, we’re in the same boat.
And I can tell you exactly what you and your teachers will gain access to, as soon as you sign up for an annual license.
Everything That’s Included in Your School’s Annual Membership
- ✅ Thirty courses covering ten key areas of teaching and learning. Underpinned by research around what works; informed by my decade and a half helping schools and teachers in the UK and around the world achieve their goals.
- ✅ These are the areas that really matter: Feedback, Metacognition, Independent Learning, Differentiation and Adaptive Teaching, Independent Learning, Scaffolding and Modelling, Oracy, Collaborative Learning, Maximising the Impact of Teaching Assistants, and Pupil Voice.
- ✅ 900+ tried-and-tested practical strategies your teachers can tweak, modify and adapt for use in their classrooms. These techniques cover primary and secondary teaching, from KS1 – KS5, but they are not relevant to EYFS.

- ✅ A curated group of practical guides. These come together to create a bespoke CPD library staff in your school can consult for ideas, guidance and support. They mirror the ten key areas of teaching and learning we focus on in the courses.
- ✅ An extensive collection of forty ‘big picture’ videos. You and your teachers can use these to stimulate creative thinking around lesson planning, assessment and day-to-day teaching, and as the basis of meaningful professional dialogue.

- ✅ A complete suite of materials for supporting ASD learners in mainstream classrooms. Including expert insights from experienced professionals, a detailed overview of what autism is, and extensive guidance on practical strategies that work.
- ✅ A growing library of exclusive webinars targeting the key questions and challenges teachers face in their classrooms today. As well as the opportunity to nominate future webinar topics, based on your school’s most pressing needs.
- ✅ Two courses designed exclusively to meet the needs of your teaching assistants. Teaching and Learning Tools for Teaching Assistants and Positive Behaviour Management for Teaching Assistants. These courses give you an instant tool with which to support and grow your TAs, on top of everything your teachers can use.
But That’s Not All. As a Leader, You’ll Also Get:
- ✅ The ability to send a clear message to every member of your team about how you value their autonomy and professional judgement.
- ✅ Exceptional value for money that justifies CPD spend in a way that a single day of INSET often can’t. This is 12-months’ access for every member of staff versus a single day of external input.
- ✅ Instant access for all your staff to every element of the platform. A huge depth of professional development material, tightly focussed on the one thing that matters more than anything else: developing teaching and learning.
- ✅ The chance to create a culture of collaboration in which developing teaching and learning becomes a shared endeavour, and doesn’t feel like a leadership surveillance exercise for your staff (even if that was never your intention).
- ✅ The opportunity to give your teachers the freedom to choose professional development that matters to them and that marries up with the needs of their learners.
- ✅ The foundation of a professional development culture that recognises the core needs teachers have as professionals – the need for autonomy, for purpose, and for mastery.
- ✅ The greater likelihood of retaining your teaching staff, by demonstrating to them the value you place on their growth as practitioners and leaders of learning in their classrooms.
- ✅ A pre-written suite of emails you can send to staff through the year, engaging them with different aspects of the platform. This ensures your school’s membership remains at the top of teachers’ minds, without you needing to do anything other than send the emails.
- ✅ Guidance documentation covering strategies you can use to keep teaching and learning at the top of the agenda, and sustain momentum throughout the year. These are strategies that work. Strategies I have used with countless schools, both secondary and primary, with consistently excellent results.
Teaching and Learning. Plain and Simple.
The entire focus of Mike Gershon’s Effective Teaching and Learning is, well, teaching and learning.
No dilution.
No firing off in different directions.
No padding the platform out with esoteric or irrelevant courses.
I’ve picked ten key areas of teaching and learning – ten areas that research and experience tell us truly matter – and built the platform around them:
- 🎯 Feedback
- 🎯 Metacognition
- 🎯 Independent Learning
- 🎯 Scaffolding and Modelling
- 🎯 Differentiation (or Adaptive Teaching)
- 🎯 Assessment for Learning
- 🎯 Talk, Discussion and Oracy
- 🎯 Collaborative Learning
- 🎯 Maximising the Impact of Teaching Assistants
- 🎯 Pupil Voice
For each, you’ll find three courses composed of expert video guidance from me.
Filled with practical strategies, techniques and activities teachers can adapt and modify for use in their own classrooms.
But what you won’t find is me telling your teachers that there’s one right way to teach.
Some magic formula or trademarked method.
And there are no walkthroughs, starting from the premise that teachers don’t already know what they’re doing.
Instead, you’ll find me doing what I’ve been doing for the last fifteen years, with hundreds of schools and tens of thousands of teachers.
Presenting professional colleagues with ideas and strategies that work, and asking them the questions:
- ✅ What are your thoughts on this?
- ✅ How does it tally with your experience of teaching?
- ✅ Would it work in your classroom, and how might you need to adapt it to fit the needs of your learners?
Every course has reflection at its heart.
Giving teachers the opportunity to connect the ideas and strategies to their work in the classroom, with their learners.
So before we look at costs and practicalities, let’s step inside the platform and see what those courses look like.

What does it cost and how do you use the platform?
Pricing is simple and transparent.
How you use the platform is up to you. Entirely.

But what I will do is give you some suggestions of how you can use it, and how it can be effective in your school.
And during the onboarding process, we’ll be available to support you.
Helping ensure you and your staff have a seamless introduction to the platform.
Everything is Included
One payment really does cover everything, for all staff, for a full year.
There are no hidden charges, no extra costs.
One payment, and that’s it.
Simple, transparent pricing designed to give you clarity.
And to help you demonstrate to governors why an annual membership represents exceptional value for money for your school.
Here’s What Every Licence Includes
- ✅ All licences are for one year, with an option to renew at the end of twelve months. While we recommend September, January or April start dates, you can choose when your licence begins.
- ✅ All licences cover all teaching staff. During the period of your licence, you can add any new members of staff who join your school, at no additional cost.
- ✅ We also offer the option of adding teaching assistants. If you choose to take this up, there is again no additional cost. Simply add your TAs to your plan, so they can access the platform.
- ✅ All licences offer access to the entire platform. That includes all thirty courses, all practical guides, every big picture video, the full suite of supporting ASD learners materials, and the webinar library. No exclusions. Plus, you and your staff will get immediate access to all new material added to the platform during the period of your licence.
- ✅ You and your teachers will get direct access to Mike, meaning you can tell him what new content you would most like to see on the platform, and what new materials will most help you in your work. While we can’t guarantee Mike will be able to create everything he’s asked for, he will develop new materials for the most requested topics.
Primary Schools: One Payment for One Year for All Staff

✅ That’s equivalent to approximately 1% of the average school’s annual spend on teaching assistants.
✅ Based on a primary school with fifteen teachers, it’s around £14 per teacher, per month.
✅ Which works out at less than 0.2% of the average primary school’s total yearly budget.
✅ And if you also decide to add your teaching assistants to the platform, there’s no extra cost, meaning their membership comes in at zero additional spend.
***Discounted pricing is available for small primary schools, which we class as those with six teaching staff or less.***
Secondary Schools: One Payment for One Year for All Staff

✅ That’s equivalent to approximately 1.9% of the average school’s yearly spend on teaching assistants.
✅ Based on a secondary school with sixty teachers, that’s around £6.93 per teacher, per month.
✅ Which works out at less than 0.1% of the average secondary school’s total yearly budget.
✅ And remember that teaching assistants are free. If you want to add them to your licence, there is no extra charge, and it will lower the average cost per user.
***Discounted pricing is available for small secondary schools, which we class as those with thirty teaching staff or less.***
Yes, You Can Use Pupil Premium Funding
The Research is Clear. Developing Teaching and Learning Has A Disproportionate Impact for Disadvantaged Learners
✅ High quality teaching is the single biggest lever any school has to improve outcomes for disadvantaged and vulnerable learners.
✅ Pupil premium funding includes whole-school initiatives that directly benefit disadvantaged learners.
✅ Giving teachers in your school the confidence, independence and scope to develop their practice in a meaningful way impacts all learners, including those who are disadvantaged.
✅ Mike Gershon’s Effective Teaching and Learning is rooted in research around what works in the classroom and gives your teachers the practical tools they need to develop their practice.
✅ A single payment provides your school with an annual licence for all staff, including teaching assistants, representing exceptional value for money and leaving the majority of your pupil premium budget untouched.
Staff Retention Pays for Itself Many Times Over
If membership of Mike Gershon’s Effective Teaching and Learning helps you to retain just a single teacher who might otherwise have left to work elsewhere, your licence has paid for itself.
If membership helps you to retain two teachers who might otherwise have considered an alternative role, the licence will have paid for itself twice over.
Three teachers or more?
The savings on recruitment costs have the potential to stack up, not to mention the time savings and enhanced continuity that result from lower turnover.
And that is on top of the immediate benefits you and your teachers gain from being part of the platform.
Thought of like this, an annual licence has the potential to not only pay for itself, but also to generate savings that you and your fellow senior leaders can use in ways that you want.
Rather than the money going to job adverts, recruitment agents and staff cover costs.
How Can You Use the Platform With Your Teachers?
The answer to this question is ultimately down to your creative thinking, how you work with your with staff, and your professional decision-making.

However, let me give you a few examples as a starting point:
- 🎯 Create dedicated time within your school calendar where staff can pursue their specific interests on the platform. For example, a one hour slot every other week.
- 🎯 Ask staff to create their own, personalised professional development pathways to pursue through the year. Share the platform with them and invite them to select an initial three courses that are of greatest interest to them. They can then work through these as the year progresses.
- 🎯 Lead a vote asking staff which of the ten areas of teaching and learning they feel are most relevant and meaningful to your school. Use the results to plan a sequence of Focussed Fortnights. During each fortnight the focus is on a different area of teaching and learning, as voted for by staff, with teachers given time to explore the relevant materials either individually or in teams.
- 🎯 Create professional learning communities (PLCs) in your school. Ask staff to express preferences for individual courses or areas of teaching and learning. Teachers who share interests team up in a PLC. They then have dedicated time in which they can work through/discuss relevant courses together. Gaps between meetings provide opportunities to implement new ideas into classroom practice.
- 🎯 Develop a reward structure to recognise the time, effort and commitment staff have put into their professional development. For example, when a staff member completes three courses, they receive a public acknowledgement and a token of appreciation. You can scale this up for a larger number of courses. And give out the biggest reward if there are any teachers who complete all thirty courses!
And That’s Not All
Because I understand how important engagement is, and how crucial it is to continually build trust with the teaching staff in your school, you will receive an engagement support pack when you take out a licence.
This includes 39 ready-to-send emails you can use to engage, excite and enthuse staff throughout the year, connecting them with the platform on a weekly basis.
Each email focuses on one element of the platform – a video, a guide or an idea – that is directly relevant to daily teaching.
Simply copy and paste the email and the subject line, and send to your staff.
Each email contains a link that will take your teachers to the platform, encouraging them to sign in, access the materials, and start a discussion with their peers.

You’ll also receive an exclusive guide covering strategies you can use to keep teaching and learning at the top of the agenda, and sustain momentum throughout the year.
These are strategies that work.
Strategies I have used with countless schools, both secondary and primary, with consistently excellent results.
In the guide, you’ll find a range of options that you can use to create and sustain momentum in your school, further ensuring engagement with the platform.
All this comes FREE OF CHARGE with every license, to help make your life easier and simplify the process of bringing your staff onboard.
No Unlocks Anywhere on the Platform
Plus, there’s one more feature of the site that will help ensure the engagement of your staff.
- ✅ No unlocks.
- ✅ No gated content.
- ✅ No hidden materials.
I’ve seen other professional development platforms treat teachers as if they aren’t already experienced in their work.
Here’s a classic example of what I mean.
A teacher sits down to look at a course recommended by their line manager.
They sign in, find the course, and click through.
Then what happens?
They have to unlock every section. One by one. With no shortcuts.
And no way of speeding it up.

I’ve heard cases of teachers having to spend an hour clicking, scrolling and letting videos play, just so they can get to the piece of content that was recommended to them.
The result?
Disengagement.
A sense of not being trusted.
And, potentially, collateral damage to the relationships we invest so much time in developing, between us and the teachers we lead.
I’ve genuinely never understood why a teacher should have to sequentially unlock every element of a course.
It runs completely counter to the idea of professional autonomy.
If it’s a compliance course – like safeguarding or health and safety – then of course unlocking makes sense.
But for developing teaching and learning?
Why create friction?
Why compel teachers to fight their way to the things that most interest them?
A key design choice I made at the very start of building Mike Gershon’s Effective Teaching and Learning was no unlocks.
None at all. Anywhere.
As soon as a teacher logs into the platform, everything is open, and everything is accessible.
Let’s say one of your teachers is interested in the Giving Effective Feedback course, but they’re already fairly confident with delivering feedback.
That teacher can navigate to the course, and look through everything it contains.
Better yet, they can pick out the sections that are most relevant to them.
Like Written Feedback Implementation Strategies.
And they can then watch that specific video, without needing to unlock anything to get them there.
Instantly, they have practical strategies at their fingertips, ready to use in their classroom.
All without having to sit through a lengthy unlocking process that eats away at their time, and undermines their sense of control.
That’s what building a platform focussed on teacher autonomy means in practice.
And that’s just another of the ways that I’ve designed Mike Gershon’s Effective Teaching and Learning so it works for your teachers, not against them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will we get access to new materials as part of our licence?
Yes, absolutely. All new materials added to the platform will automatically become available to your teachers during the period of your licence.
How do I check whether staff are using the platform?
Simple; you ask them if they are.
Another option is to create dedicated time in the calendar when staff can use the platform in school.
Or you can create professional learning communities (PLCs), where staff with similar interests get together to work through or discuss a course in which they are all interested.
Or you can ask staff to complete the workbooks included in the platform and to then share these with you.
Or you can invite staff to create their own professional development pathway by selecting from the thirty courses available, and then talk to them about their progress through the year.
Or you can ask staff to vote on which of the ten areas they find most relevant and then have focussed fortnights where you ask everyone to look at one or more of the courses connected to a particular area.
Or you can come up with your own creative plans – and get in touch with Mike once you’re signed up to talk through your ideas.
Can we purchase a license for some of our teachers, but not all?
No, school licences cover all staff. If you want to purchase an individual license for yourself or a teacher in your school, you can do so here.
I would like to make my own selection of courses, can I do this?
No, licences cover access to all materials on the platform. We do not offer bespoke selections.
We don’t want to wait until September/January/April can we start sooner?
Yes, of course. While we advise schools to start within these key windows, as they are natural transition points in the school year, if you do want to start at a different point, we will make it happen for you.
We’re a small school, do you do reduced rates?
Yes. We class a small primary as one that has six teaching staff or less and a small secondary as one that has 30 teaching staff or less. If you fall into one of these categories, use the contact form to get in touch and tell us about your specific circumstances.
Is there a limit on the number of staff included in a licence?
Yes. The maximum number of staff on an individual licence is 150, roughly the number of teachers and teaching assistants in a large secondary school. If you have more than that number of staff, including if you are a college, please get in touch and tell us about your circumstances.
